Zoe Karssen

Tie-dye, scrunchies, and crimped hair are (minor?) fashion felonies we can all agree we’ve committed at one point or another in our lives. Felonies for good reason- nobody looks back on their twelfth grade photos and is thankful their mother let them wear “B.U.M.” hoodies. For one Amsterdam based designer however, her re-enactment of the childhood do-it-yourself-t-shirt was exactly what started her company- a unique brand mixing rock & roll aesthetics with pop culture- loved by both celebrities and regulars alike.

The beloved company, sold in 300 countries worldwide, started with Zoe and her boyfriend Quince moving to the Netherlands. Quince worked for Tommy Hilfiger, while Zoe worked for a Dutch denim company called Blue Blood. It was there, while Zoe was working, a stylist saw her t-shirt- where she had written a quote in sharpie- and immediately decided that it needed to be featured in a magazine- and none other than Glamour! The response and need for the style was overwhelming and it was then that Zoe and Quince realized they had a real opportunity, therefore creating one of the world’s most coveted labels- Zoe Karssen.

With her outspoken designs and graphics, it’s a no-brainer as to her countless celebrity fans (Beyoncé, Cara Delevingne, and Rihanna... to name a few). While we already love having our shelves stocked with her name, we thought we would give you a few reasons why she belongs in your closet, too.

  1. It’s real. Zoe Karssen isn’t a factory brand, nor is it manufactured in foreign countries. The dynamic duo, despite the demand for their iconic brand, still manage to make everything IN HOUSE. They believe in having complete control in its production, and strive to keep the costs low. So you can have your cake and eat it too- this brand is made by the people, for the people.
  2. It’s casual. Zoe herself has a strong belief that t-shirts should always be loose fit (that’s right ladies- the pressure of tight shirts is gone!) For that reason, she maintains her idea of comfy, casual clothing in everything she produces! No more worrying about fitting into the “hip, tight” clothes, you can look just as cool without nearly the effort.
  3. The quality. With both Zoe and Quince being trained as graphic designers in fashion, you can bet that they have become specialists in mixing materials and treatments.  The two designers would rather focus on the color cards and cool new graphics than designing entirely new collections every season- making it a must have in both comfort and style.

So next time you pick up a magazine, watch an episode of “E-Talk”, or even walk into a certain store in Edmonton (wink wink), you know exactly who is behind those bat shirts- and why they need to be in your closet ASAP.
